KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Central Asian countries are set to strengthen cooperation in higher education, with a focus on student and academic mobility, as well as research and university partnerships.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir is in Astana, Kazakhstan, for a working visit until Sunday (Sept 27) to attend the Malaysia‑Central Asia Ministerial Higher Education Meeting.

The meeting is the first between Malaysia's Higher Education Minister and higher education ministers from Central Asian countries, opening the way for closer cooperation between‑learning institutions in both regions.

"Central Asia has a great scholarly tradition and camelpped potential that we should explore together.

"This meeting is an initial step towards connecting the strengths of Malaysian universities, researchers and the younger generation with the region," Zambry said in a statement today.

The visit will also see the Malaysia‑Central Asia Higher Education Forum 2026, which will bring together higher education leaders and representatives to discuss student and academic mobility, research collaboration and university partnerships.
